Funding boost for regulatory services leadership course

LACORS is urging aspiring leaders working in council regulatory services to make the most of its exciting new strategic leadership course after securing a generous funding package from the Local Better Regulation Office.

In addition to a LACORS bursary which will match-fund two places on each of the first two ‘Strategic Leadership in Modern Local Government' programmes, LBRO's contribution of £24,000 will provide match-funding for twelve places, six on each course. The programme, based on a well proved approach, has been designed by the highly regarded training providers KBA Solutions who will run the course with direct support from LACORS.

The course is the first of its kind to include a foundation module aimed at officers from environmental health, trading standards, planning, building control and other regulatory services backgrounds. Designed with the help of LACORS, the additional module provides a broader context and perspective of council regulatory services, highlighting their contribution to the leadership and place-shaping role of modern local government.

Clive Grace, the LBRO Chair, said:

"Issues of leadership and culture are critical to successful and modern local authority regulatory services. Managers of regulatory services already deal with many of the big issues in local government, from economic regeneration to public health and housing, and this course will help them show that they are capable of dealing with the big jobs in local government too.

"We are delighted to be able to support the leaders of tomorrow - the course that LACORS and KBA have developed will play a significant part in developing their potential and gaining the regulatory services the recognition it deserves as a means of delivering both prosperity and protection."

Derek Allen, executive director of LACORS, said:

"This programme will provide officers working in council regulatory services with the tools they need to become the strategic leaders of tomorrow. I am pleased LACORS has been able to use its unique positioning and insight to create the bespoke regulatory services module with our partners KBA Solutions. We believe it will help highlight the central role that regulatory services play in successful modern local government.

"I am delighted that LBRO are able to support our leadership programme in such a generous way with these bursaries. I have no doubt this will encourage a wide range of aspiring leaders, from councils big and small, to take part in this programme."

This groundbreaking and innovative leadership programme is designed to turn senior managers and aspiring senior managers into the strategic leaders of tomorrow. The programme launches on 16 October 2008 at Local Government House with six further modules separated by self-managed action learning days. On completing the programme, participants will be ready to:
