Better understanding, smarter regulation
16 July 2010
Another step towards making the regulatory system work better has been taken following the signing of memoranda of understanding between LBRO, the technical expert on local regulation, and five major regulatory bodies.
The Health and Safety Executive, the Office of Fair Trading, the Environment Agency, the Food Standards Agency, and the Gambling Commission have all added their names to the documents which underpin how the organisations work together.
LBRO works closely with business, national regulators, government departments, professional bodies and local authorities to deliver necessary system changes to enable more professional enforcement that reduces burdens on businesses and the taxpayer, whilst protecting the public from unnecessary risks.
LBRO Chairman Clive Grace said: "We see these memoranda as more threads which pull together the regulatory system, making it tighter and better co-ordinated. By sharing our experience and intelligence we are working in a smarter way, which in turn will create efficiency savings in the system."
Tim Smith, Chief Executive of Food Standards Agency, said: "I welcome the MoU which reflects a continuing commitment to deliver effective consumer protection while ensuring proportionate and consistent enforcement for businesses at a local level."
